Burst pipe? What to do before the plumber arrives
The first few minutes matter most. These steps limit the damage while help is on the way.
Step by step
- Shut off the main water valve. In HDB flats it is usually next to the water meter outside your door or in the service yard. In condos, check the riser cabinet in the corridor.
- Cut the power to wet areas. If water is near sockets, appliances or the heater, switch off at the main breaker.
- Open a cold tap at the lowest point to drain remaining water from the pipes.
- Move valuables and electronics off the floor.
- Soak up water with towels and mops to protect flooring and the unit below.
- Take photos of the damage for insurance or your management office.
- Call a plumber. Send a photo on WhatsApp so they bring the right parts.
Tell your neighbour below
If water is spreading fast, let your downstairs neighbour know. Quick warning can save their ceiling and belongings.
After the repair
Ask the plumber to check nearby pipes. If your pipes are old and corroded, one burst is often followed by another.
