Why is my toilet choked? 5 common causes in HDB flats
Most toilet chokes come down to a handful of causes. Knowing them helps you fix the problem, and stop it coming back.
1. Wet wipes
Wet wipes, even ones labelled "flushable", do not break down like toilet paper. They catch on joints and bends in the pipe and build up over time. This is the most common cause we see.
2. Too much toilet paper at once
Modern low-flush cisterns use less water. A thick wad of paper may not be carried all the way down. Flushing twice for heavy use helps.
3. Sanitary items and diapers
These expand when wet and are one of the hardest blockages to clear. They should always go in the bin.
4. Objects dropped by children
Toys, toothbrushes and bottle caps can lodge in the bowl trap. If a choke appears suddenly and a plunger does not help, this is a likely cause.
5. A problem in the common stack
If your neighbours above or below are also having chokes, the blockage may be in the shared stack pipe. That is for the town council, so report it to them.
What you can try first
- Stop flushing, so the bowl does not overflow
- Use a flange plunger (the type with an extra rubber sleeve), with firm, steady pushes
- If water drains, flush once with the cistern lid off so you can stop it if it rises
Avoid chemical drain cleaners. They rarely clear solid blockages and are dangerous if they splash.
