Floor trap smells: causes and fixes
A bad smell from the floor trap is common in Singapore homes. The cause is usually simple, and so is the fix.
1. The water seal has dried out
Floor traps hold water that blocks sewer gas. In a bathroom or yard that is rarely used, the water evaporates and the smell comes up. Fix: pour a pail of water into the trap every week or two.
2. Hair, soap and dirt build-up
Gunk collects in the trap and starts to rot. Fix: lift the grating, remove the debris and scrub the trap. Flush with hot (not boiling) water.
3. A partial choke
If water drains slowly and smells, there is likely a partial blockage further down. Fix: a plumber can clear it with a drain snake.
4. Damaged trap or seal
Cracks or a failed seal let gas escape even when the trap is full. Fix: the trap or seal needs repair or replacement.
5. The smell is coming from elsewhere
Sometimes the smell comes from a basin trap, a toilet bowl seal or the washing machine outlet. Check each one before blaming the floor trap.

Can I use bleach in a floor trap?
Occasionally, diluted, for cleaning. It will not fix a dry seal or a choke.
Why does it smell more at night?
Air pressure changes in the stack pipe can push gas through a weak seal, especially when many units are using water.
