7 signs of a hidden pipe leak in your home
Concealed pipes can leak for months before you see water. Catching it early saves on repairs and water bills.
The signs
- Your water bill rises with no change in usage
- Paint bubbling or peeling on a wall with pipes behind it
- Damp patches or a musty smell that does not go away
- Mould on walls or at skirting boards
- Tiles lifting or grout darkening near the bathroom
- Sound of running water when all taps are off
- Your downstairs neighbour reports ceiling stains
The water meter test
- Turn off every tap, and make sure the cistern is not refilling
- Note the reading on your water meter (take a photo)
- Wait 30–60 minutes without using any water
- Check the meter again. If it has moved, water is escaping somewhere
If the meter moves, check toilets first: a running cistern is a common "leak" that is easy to fix. Put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern; if colour appears in the bowl without flushing, the flush valve is leaking.
What not to do
Do not start hacking walls to find the leak. A plumber can usually narrow the location by isolating pipe sections first, which keeps any hacking small.
